Webelos get CPR Certified

The Webelos II’s met at Code Blue CPR on Tuesday to undergo CPR training. They all got to save a life of a mannequin while practicing the proper ways to do CPR on adults and children. They also learned how to do the Heimlich maneuver on people who are choking. Let’s hope that they never have to use these skills, but it is great to know that these young men are learning a skill that could potentially save a life. We are proud of them for taking the time to do something that is not required of them. All the boys and two leaders were officially AHA CPR certified.

Webelos rough it despite the weather to earn their badges

Ok, so it wasn’t roughing it too much, but despite the cold, rainy weather the Webelos spent the day working on their badges. The boys took a hike around Quincy reservoir and that night had a great campfire and tacos in a bag for dinner. Don’t knock it till you try it!!! Dinner was followed up with the traditional s’mores. The Den leader managed to find some HUGE marshmallows, a big Hershey bar and Reese’s peanut butter cups with so much sugar we couldn’t get them to sit hence the somewhat blurry pictures. We also sang campfire songs and played games.

Pack 803′s SHUMC spring cleanup

We had over 22 scouts, parents, leaders and family members help out today with our community service cleanup project at SHUMC. Thank you to everyone who helped out. We did a great job!

2011 Pinewood Derby

Space Derby 2010 was a big success

The first annual Space Derby seemed to be a huge success! We had about 80 people show up to race and cheer on the boys. All the rockets looked great. Nobody reached the end of the track, but that gives us something to shoot for next year. Thank you volunteers for helping out, especially the winders!!!

2011 Pinewood Derby

The pinewood derby is scheduled for February 12th at Smoky Hill United Methodist Church 10:30-2.
Car check-in starts promptly at 10am
The race will start at 10:30pm.
Please be early or on time. Do not be late.
Due to the nature of our racing system we can not accecpt late entries!

There will be a preliminary weigh-in on February 1st at canyon creek from 6:30 – 7:30pm along with a chance to test your car on our track.

The pinewood derby rules are as follows:

The car weight shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 ¾ inches.
The car must have 1 ¾” clearance between the wheels.
Height of the car shall not exceed 3 inches.
The car must have 3/8” clearance underneath the body.
The wood provided in the kit must be used. The block may be shaped any way that is desired.
The wheels supplied with the kit must be used. The wheels may not be modified in any way.
The axles (nails) supplied with the kit must be used. They may be polished or lubricated with a dry lubricant like graphite.
Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.
The car must not ride on any type of springs.
The car must be freewheeling, with no starting devices.
No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.
The front of the car may not be shaped to a point or fork.
Scout needs to do the majority of the work on the car.
Car must be built this year.
No pre-made cars are allowed. The car will be immediately disqualified.
Details such as the steering wheel, driver, decals, painting, and interior detail are permissible as long as these details do not exceed the maximum length, width and weight of specifications.
Once cars have been registered, weighed and certified, they will remain in the possession of the race committee until the end of the competition

Derby Trophies will be given for:
1st, 2nd, & 3rd place in each den.
1st, 2nd, & 3rd place in pack overall.

The following awards will be given by our Derby Judges:

Space Derby Rules

It’s almost time for Pack 803′s first annual Space Derby!! Kits will be handed out at the Nov 18th Pack meeting. If there are any extra kits families and friend may purchase a kit for the open class for $7.

Only basic materials supplied in the Official BSA kit may be used. The hanging devise supplied in the kit must be used.
The nose cone (propeller assembly) must not be glued in place on the nose of the rocket. A notch or groove should be formed in the tail of the rocket to seat the band holding dowel. The band holding dowel must not be glued in place. (These rules allow band replacement in case of breaks)
The rocket body may be no longer than 7 inches, not including the propeller and fins. Width 2.75 inches -Three rubber bands per rocket. A limited number of replacement rubber bands will be provided.
There are no restrictions on the weight or design of the rocket. Rockets may be detailed in any way as long as it does not exceed length restrictions, is flight worthy, structurally sound and does not interfere with another rocket during the race.
Rockets with wet paint will be disqualified.
Scout may use graphite powder between the propeller and the bushing if desired. Other forms of lubrication are prohibited.
Scout shall use rocket built for this year, no previous year rockets will be allowed.
Each ROCKET will be wound the same amount of turns. A winding area will be provided for racers in the next heat. Rockets are to not be wound more than 100 turns or rubber bands will break. Track will be 40 foot set up.
Prior to each heat, rocket numbers and lane assignments will be announced. Pilots are to take their rocket from the space hanger and go to the winding area. Once completed hand your rocket to the launcher. Upon completion of the race, “Space Command” will bring the rockets back to the staging area.
At registration judges will assign a number to the rocket.
Once the rocket is submitted for entry, no further adjustments can be made except in the case of mechanical failure.
Each rocket will run at least once in each lane. More races may be required to advance into the finals.
Any entry that experiences a mechanical failure will be allowed to re-race if it can be repaired during the same heat. It will count as a heat loss if it cannot be repaired prior to the beginning of the next heat. All repairs of this type must be done with “Space Command” observing and certifying as to its flight worthiness.
In the event that all rockets don’t reach the end of track, the one that goes the furthest is declared the winner.
One Rocket Only per scout.
Racing volunteers are only allowed in the Space Track area.
No late registrations will be accepted after the races have begun. No exceptions
All rulings by “Space Command” are FINAL.

Fishing Derby Information

Saturday the 25th is our Fishing Derby. There has been all sorts of excitement with this so let’s go have some fun. Below is a list of some of the questions we have been receiving.

How much is the Pack charging the families for this event? FREE

How much does it cost per person or per car to get in? $10 PER CAR

What activities will the boys be doing? FISHING AND CASTING, BAIT AND KNOT TYING, NATURE HIKE, FISH ID, FISHING REGULATIONS, WATER AND FISHING SAFETY, LEAVE NO TRACE (if you complete all of these stations, you can earn your fishing belt loop and pin, WeBeLos will earn a couple of others)

Are you still doing three rotations? 1 ROTATION OF EACH STATION, FISHING 2 TIMES (the stations will be assigned at check-in)

What adult volunteers are needed? SUPERVISION OF THEIR CHILD/REN (if you have volunteered your skills directly, I will be in touch by Thursday to give you an idea of what you will be doing)

What are the boys supposed to bring? FISHING POLE, HOOKS, TACKLE BOX *IF YOU HAVE ONE. BAIT WILL BE PROVIDED. SUNSCREEN, HAT AND SUNGLASSES, BLANKET FOR PICNIC LUNCH, AND PLENTY OF WATER

Where can bait and fishing license be purchased for those over age 16? WAL-MART OR SPORTING GOOD STORES

What kind of bait will be provided or needs to be purchased by individual boys? EARTHWORMS WILL BE PROVIDED. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING ELSE, PLEASE BRING IT.

Do you need families to bring extra poles? IF YOU HAVE EXTRAS BRING THEM (LABELED) FOR THOSE WHO DO NOT

Is there a contest for who catches the most or the biggest? MOST FISH, BIGGEST (LENGTH AND WEIGHT) AND SMALLEST (LENGTH AND WEIGHT) - 5 PRIZES TOTAL

What kind of fish are there to be caught? TROUT WALLEYE SMALL-AND LARGE-MOUTH BASS WIPER, CRAPPIE, CATFISH, AND YELLOW PERCH

Do you need a head count/RSVP? PREFERRED BUT NOT NECESSARY. YOU CAN RSVP IN SCOUTMANAGE OR SEND AN EMAIL TO coribrownis@yahoo.com

Is there a grill I can use? THERE ARE NO GRILLS PROVIDED NEAR THE PAVILION. HOWEVER, PROPANE AND CHARCOAL GRILLS MAY BE BROUGHT IN

Pack 803 SHUMC Cleanup

That was a great turnout!!! Thank you to everyone that could attend. We were the biggest group there with 39 people. The church and their committee said they were impressed. Everyone should pat yourselves on the back for a job well done. It’s not always a fun job, but it has to be done and it was for a good cause.

Scouts is about having fun, but it is also about helping in the community.

Sorry some of you could not stick around to make it into the photo.
